Tennis News: Both day and night, Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala has progressed quickly in the 2026 US Open tournament so far.
After only losing three games in her opening round win, the 17th seed put on another impressive performance when she beat Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the US Open which lasted 1 hour 4 minutes, ensuring that she advanced to the third round in New York for the first time in her career.
The victory also served as revenge for the 2026 Washington Open champion who previously lost a three-set marathon match against Oliynykova in Strasbourg in May, after winning the first set.
“My patience and consistent focus, I think that is the key to victory in this match,” said Eala.
The 17th seed has strong reasons to highlight these two things. The tennis player, who last season made it to the round of 64 in her debut at the US Open, recorded 19 winners and made 17 unforced errors while overcoming variations in tempo and spin from Oliynykova. He also managed to suppress fierce resistance in the second set and broke his opponent’s serve five times in total.
In her second appearance at the US Open, Eala is looking to match her glorious achievement of reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon this summer, an achievement that catapulted her into the elite ranks of the world of tennis.
The left-handed tennis player from the Philippines immediately appeared aggressive from the start of the match. He won the first 8 points and took the opening four games. The first set lasted 23 minutes, where Oliynkova was only able to collect 10 points, while the Filipino tennis player recorded 11 winners.
The change in tactics made by the world number 46 tennis player made the final set more intense. He began to reduce the speed of his strokes by sending high balls that bounced. However, the Filipino tennis player maintained his aggressive playing style, dared to take high-risk shots, and continued to pressure his opponent who played tightly in the baseline area.
The two players broke serve in the fifth and sixth games before the Filipino managed a decisive break opportunity to lead 4-3. He finished the 63-minute match by converting the second match point opportunity.
Waiting for Eala in the third round of the US Open is another young tennis player who is starting to show her strength, Iva Jovic, who beat British tennis player Francesca Jones 6-4, 6-4.
The winner of the match has the potential to meet fourth seed Cori Gauff or Spanish tennis player Cristina Bucsa in the fourth round.
The 2023 US Open champion, Gauff beat Spanish tennis player, Paula Badosa with 6-4, 7-6, while Bucsa knocked out Japanese national, Himeno Sakatsume with 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.
