Tennis News: Australian tennis player Dane Sweeny continues to leave a mark on his debut at the final Grand Slam of the 2026 season, the US Open at Flushing Meadows, New York.

The 25-year-old scored his biggest win so far in his career after he beat 13th seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, a win that sent him into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career at the US Open.

The world number 123 has never competed in the US Open before, not even through the qualifying rounds, but now he has scored back-to-back wins at an ATP tournament for the first time.

“I am very grateful to be able to compete in the Grand Slam,” said Sweeny. “I have worked very hard. This journey in the world of tennis has been full of ups and downs. I am very grateful to be able to play in front of such an amazing crowd, enjoy this moment and achieve some wins, it feels really amazing.”

Known for his passionate and expressive style of play, the Australian came back to equalize when Musetti’s physical condition began to decline. The Italian tennis player struggled to move at the start of the third set, then took a medical break off the court after trailing 0-3.

When he returned to the match, Musetti managed to break his opponent’s serve twice, but the Australian tennis player continued to advance with a tenacious game that covered the entire court. He continued to apply pressure and outplayed the Italian in a number of rallies from the draining baseline area, using his tenacious defense to frustrate the 13th seed before finally sealing victory in a match that lasted 2 hours 36 minutes at Stadium 17.

Awaiting Sweeny in the third round of the US Open was the 21st seed, Luciano Darderi, who eliminated Czech tennis player Dalibor Svrcina 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

While Sweeny was still staying in New York, the journey of his compatriot, Alex De Minaur, ended against Dutch tennis player, Botic Van de Zandschulp, who won their meeting 6-4, 7-5, 6-2.

Two seasons after beating Carlos Alcaraz in the second round last season, Van de Zandschulp scored another surprising victory after beating sixth seed De Minaur in 2 hours 43 minutes.

By defeating world number 7, De Minaur, Van de Zandschulp secured his second win over a top 10 player in the last two months after he eliminated world number 6 at the time, Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Open.

Next, Van de Zandschulp will face the 31st seed, Zizou Bergs, who claimed a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory over another Dutch player, Jesper de Jong.
