Tennis News: Roger Federer’s presence at the 2026 US Open season is truly refreshing, it is always exciting to see a highly respected legend return to appear on one of the biggest stages in the world of tennis.
The former Swiss tennis player remains as classy and loved as ever and his presence is a welcome addition to a roster of legends, including John McEnroe, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi.
And, considering that he is currently in New York, it is not surprising that he also made a series of visits to various media.
When speaking to ESPN, the former world number 1 tennis player was asked to name the achievements in his brilliant career that even now amaze him. Of course, considering the success he has achieved, the tennis star has many options.
Federer narrowed his options down to just a few when he answered, “I mean, I find it hard to believe that I can win eight Wimbledon titles. For me, that’s an incredible number. Just being able to play at Wimbledon is enough for me. To win one is already OK, let alone eight. So, that’s really amazing.”
“Or five wins in a row here at the US Open. Those kinds of things are really extraordinary.”
“That period of being in first place — maybe consecutively after I started going fast — and that four and a half seasons, it’s hard to believe that I could achieve something like that, because I wasn’t raised with the expectation of being that successful, you know, right? And that’s why I’m happy that I was able to do it in a very natural and simple way.”
“Listen, I tried my best. I had extraordinary coaches and received extraordinary support along the way. When faced with a crossroads, I was able to determine the direction and make the right decisions, then continue to persevere, because we know there will be ups and downs, both in professional sports and tennis in general, especially with all the demands of the journey that has to be undertaken. So, I think, those are the things that are the most memorable.”
Of course, with eight Wimbledon titles, Federer stands alone as the most successful male tennis player in the history of the Grand Slam. However, this figure was actually surpassed by Martina Navratilova’s record in the women’s category.
During her incredible reign in the WTA tournament, Navratilova won the Wimbledon singles title nine times, including six consecutive wins between the 1982 and 1987 seasons.
Right behind Federer are Pete Sampras and Novak Djokovic — both of whom have seven titles — followed by Bjorn Borg with five titles.
Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Steffi Graf and Serena Williams occupy the next position in Open Era history with six titles.
