Tennis News: Matteo Berrettini reveals the harsh treatment his family received from gamblers amid the new partnership forged by the US Open.
Earlier this week, tournament organizers announced Kalshi as its first Official Prediction Market Partner. As part of the deal, the sports prediction company will be promoted via digital platforms and billboards in field areas.
However, they are prohibited from engaging in markets involving high-risk variables, such as referee decisions, tennis player injuries and rule violations. Additionally, Kalshi will share real-time data with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) to monitor for suspicious trading activity.
The involvement of betting companies in the world of tennis is a complex issue. Those in favor argue that this will bring investment into the sport and help its development. On the other hand, research has shown a close link between betting activity and threats aimed at tennis players in the tournament.
“It’s a complicated issue, because tennis players — including myself — have said that we receive certain messages. I personally have had moments where I felt uncomfortable playing against people who disrupted the match and did things that I thought had nothing to do with tennis, especially in the area around the court,” explained Berrettini after beating Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the US Open.
“I see that especially in Challenger level tournaments and also in some videos that show very bad situations. I know it’s complicated, it’s not easy to just say, ‘You can come in’ or ‘You can’t come in’, because we don’t know how they will behave, but clearly there has to be action taken.”
“On the other hand, in my opinion, if it is done in the right way and managed in a controlled manner – regarding this betting issue – and does not damage the integrity of the game due to betting practices, it can actually be something quite fun.”
The former world number 6 revealed that earlier this season his family received threats from angry bettors, who contacted his brother via text message. Therefore, he believes that protecting tennis players must be a top priority.
“At Roland Garros, he (Berrettini’s brother) received messages on his cell phone containing threats against my family and things like that. So, I think we need to establish a stronger framework — I don’t know, maybe a stronger committee — to protect tennis players,” said Berrettini.
“I won a match and they wrote things like, ‘Matteo is so bad, so if you don’t tell him to lose’ — or something like that — ‘we will kill your family’ or ‘we will do this’. They threatened us.”
“He reported everything to the ATP and we reported everything. They had our phone numbers and other information. But, we are 30 years old, we are adults, however, when you think about female tennis players and younger players, receiving messages like that can be scary. We are tennis players, so it is important for us to protect ourselves.”
According to research conducted by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and World Tennis, 42 percent of all verified abuse cases and 59 percent of all cases of severe abuse targeting tennis players at tournaments in the 2025 season came from angry gamblers. A total of 1.2 million uploads and comments were analyzed using the Threat Matrix service.
Meanwhile, Berrettini will compete against Argentine tennis player Mariano Navone in the second round of the US Open.
