Tennis News: Once again, all eyes are on the home favorite, Ben Shelton at the 2026 US Open season after he made a brilliant comeback in the second match in a row — this time in four sets — to advance to the third round.
At Arthur Ashe Stadium, the eighth seed hit a sharp forehand, recovered after dropping the second set, and used the crowd’s support to claim a fierce 6-3, 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 victory over former top 10 player from Poland, Hubert Hurkacz.
“I’m very happy with how this match went. The battle was fierce until the end and I think Hubi played extraordinary,” said Shelton. “It was really difficult to deal with all the attacks he launched and if I were a commentator, I would definitely highlight how noisy the crowd was from the start to the end of the match.”
The last US male tennis player to win the US Open was Andy Roddick in 2003, but the 2026 Canadian Open champion is one of a number of US tennis stars who are determined to end the long wait in the next two weeks. As the eighth seed, the left-hander is the highest seeded player from the US and so far he has been able to meet the expectations placed on him well.
When facing Hurkacz, the home player hit 44 winners while making 35 unforced errors and seemed able to raise his level of play at crucial moments. He added strength and physical intensity in the decisive moments to dominate and defeat Hurkacz.
Awaiting Shelton in the third round of the US Open was Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov who knocked out French tennis player Luca Van Assche 6-0, 6-4, 7-6. To date the eighth seed has dominated their head to head with 4-0, including winning their last meeting in Dallas this season.
The winner of the match has the potential to meet the 18th seed, Jiri Lehecka or former world number 3, Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the US Open.
In the second round, Czech tennis player Lehecka eliminated British tennis player Toby Samuel with 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, while Greek tennis player Tsitsipas eliminated South African tennis player Lloyd Harris with 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.
